Middle School and High School Learn to Row

MS/HS LTR is open to all incoming 6th graders through outgoing 12th graders interested in learning the basics of rowing, teamwork and physical fitness via dryland training. After completing this week of LTR rowers are invited to join junior novice practices through August 31st at no additional charge! Junior Novice practices are held M-F 2p-4p.

No prior experience necessary. 

Class size is limited to 5 rowers to ensure physical distancing. Rowers will be learning to to row in singles so come prepared to get wet!

Please check out our swim test requirement before signing up, and make sure your student completes the test before class begins!

What: Your Learn to Row fee includes this one week session, and the ability to join our Junior novice sculling practices through August 31st. Novice sculling practices are Monday-Friday 2p-4p.

Lead Instructor: HS LTR and Junior Novice programs will be coached by Justin Stevens.

Justin rowed four years as a member of the Vanderbilt Men's Rowing team and sculled competitively for the New York Athletic Club.  Recently, he was announced as an invitee to USA U23 lightweight 4x selection camp that would have been selected for the world championships this summer. 

Junior Varsity Team: 

There will be a parent meeting in mid-August for those interested in joining the Varsity team. Day/time/info TBD. Please email us if you have questions.

Covid-19 protocol

Athletes will be learning to row in singles only to ensure physical distancing. Unless they attend with a sibling. In that case they can row in a double. (Parent-child pairs may take adult LTR.)

Athletes must wear a mask in the boat bay. We have extras if you forget.

HERE is the link to MRC's safety protocols during Dane County Phase 1. Please read carefully. We need full participation in these protocols to maintain a safe environment for our rowers.


Q: What should I wear to class?

A: Rowing attire is close-fitting shorts or pants and t-shirt, additional layers depending on weather, gym shoes (for land classes) or water sandals and socks (for water sessions). You do not need to wear spandex.

Q: I want to learn to row in a single. Do you teach sculling?

A: For social distancing, all classes this summer teach sculling in singles!

Q: Where can I park for class?

A: Parking is available on Gorham St as well as in the James Madison Park lot at Gorham St and N Butler St.

Q: I've never rowed before. Can I take the class?

A: YES! Learn-to-Row class is designed for folks who have never rowed before.

Q: How can I continue to row after class?

A: High School LTR includes Junior practice on weekday afternoons until August 31st.
